What’s Really Included in a Window Warranty?
Shopping for new windows? You’ll probably hear a lot about warranties — “lifetime warranty,” “limited warranty,” or “transferable coverage.” But what do these terms actually mean? And more importantly, what’s covered (and what’s not)?
In this post, we’ll break down the most common types of window warranties so you can shop with confidence — and avoid surprises down the road.
1. Parts & Materials Coverage
Most window warranties include coverage for the window’s basic components:
- Vinyl frames – protection against cracking, warping, or fading
- Glass units – coverage for seal failure (fogging between panes)
- Hardware – locks, handles, balances, or other operable parts
What to watch for: Some warranties cover these items fully for the first few years, then offer prorated coverage (partial) after that.
2. Labor & Installation Warranty
This is one of the most important (and often overlooked) parts of a window warranty.
- If something goes wrong with how the window was installed — leaks, drafts, or shifting — is the labor covered?
- At New Vision Windows, we stand behind our installation with a workmanship warranty separate from the product itself.
3. Glass Breakage Coverage
Some premium window warranties include accidental glass breakage protection — but not all. This is especially important if you live in a high-traffic area or have young kids playing around the house.
Tip: Ask specifically if the warranty covers breakage or just seal failure (fog between the panes).
4. Transferable Warranties
Thinking of selling your home in the next few years? A transferable warranty can be a selling point.
- Some warranties transfer to the next homeowner — once, or for a limited time.
- Others are voided when the home changes hands.
Always ask: Can the warranty transfer? Does it require paperwork or fees?
5. Lifetime Warranty – What Does “Lifetime” Really Mean?
“Lifetime” usually refers to the expected life of the product — not your lifetime.
- Each manufacturer defines this differently, often around 20–25 years.
- Be sure to read the fine print — and know what’s prorated over time.
6. Common Exclusions in Window Warranties
Not everything is covered. Here are some common exclusions:
- Normal wear and tear
- Damage from improper maintenance or cleaning
- Storm or impact damage (unless breakage is covered)
- Shifting foundations or structural movement
Bottom line: read the warranty and ask questions. We’re happy to walk through it with you line-by-line if needed.
Why Warranty Coverage Matters
New windows are an investment — and a good warranty gives you peace of mind. But not all warranties are equal. The best ones combine:
- Strong manufacturer backing
- Clear installation and workmanship coverage
- Easy-to-understand terms
